Under A Warped Sky

A strange red fills the air above, the stars weep and flee, the world itself begins to tilt under the tyranny of this… this not-star. A single observer bears witness, rapt, though in terror or in awe, who can say, while she observes the world as she knows it comes to an end. A great stitch runs through space itself, tracing a wound that has yet to heal. What does the arrival of this not-star herald, besides inevitable change?

Not quite sure myself yet….. this is one of the first pieces I’ve actually worked on in quite a while, and, as was in the newsletter, this is still very much a work in progress. I suppose in a bland way, most things are… but, that’s besides the point. In my doodles recently, I caught myself repeating that strange stitch pattern… something about it scratches my brain in a way I like…. so that’s where this painting began. I wanted to create something apocalyptic, something that could mean doom, but didn’t have to. It hangs overhead, like the sword of Damocles, imperiously declaring ‘something has got to give’.
Still working out some of the finer details, such as the observer herself… but, work in progress…. Also just a general work in progress for me as a painter specifically… Generally more of a pencil/pen guy myself, but you don’t get better at something by not doing it.

The original sketch, with observer. Since this is unfinished, I figured a look at exactly where this started would be kinda neat.
